I treasure this letter my son David wrote to me on Mother’s Day five years ago, and every few months I pull it out and reread it. Almost every time, I tear up.

This morning was no exception.

Tonight we’re heading to the fundraising dinner for St. Francis de Sales, the seminary David attends. I felt that little nudge to read his letter this morning as a part of my prayer and reflection time.

Dave doesn't lift the veil on his emotions very often, so his willingness to share what was on his heart made what has come to be known as "the green letter" part of our family history and a key turning point in our healing journey. For David as an individual, and for me as well. He thanked me for pointing him in the right direction and being a good example. Then he wrote these words:

“I am who I am largely because I learned how to think & act from you…”

And this part always gets me:

“I am a holy, capable man who desires the truth & to do God’s will. This is true because of you, NOT in spite of you. I thank God for blessing me with you, Mom, & you for trying your best to do his will.”

On days when I'm feeling blessed, reading these words always raises me to new levels of gratitude and on days when I'm feeling a bit disgruntled by trials in life it always turns me back to the thankful channel. ❤️

As a mother, you pray that the love you give, the example you set, and all those imperfect efforts will help your child find his way.

To have your grown son put that into words… what a gift.

I’m so proud of David, and so grateful that the Lord has called him and that he continues to say yes. As we approach his ordination as a transitional deacon next year, I can see my calling to raise him well bearing fruit.

Motherhood will always be part of my vocation. But I’ve also been asking:

Lord, what else are You calling me to?
What do You want me to do with the experiences, gifts, and time You’ve given me?

That question is at the heart of this new Living Younger Longer with Monica community.

I feel called to bring Christian women together to grow stronger in our health and our faith. To encourage one another, put what we learn into practice, and care for the bodies God has entrusted to us so we can keep showing up for the people and work He places in our lives.

Be strong so we can serve. 💪❤️✝️

For me, that means having the energy to help, the strength to participate, and the willingness to say yes when God calls, even when the next step feels uncertain.

David’s letter reminds me that our everyday efforts can make an impact we don’t always see at the time.

My hope is that this community will help each of us take those next faithful steps, together.

What is something you feel God is calling you to in this season of your life?
