Your Bones Are Under Construction — Right Now, As You Read This

Here's something most people never learn until they get that osteoporosis or osteopenia diagnosis: your bones aren't a fixed structure. They're more like a construction site that never closes - one crew tearing down, another crew rebuilding, nonstop, your whole life. That crew has names: osteoclasts (the demolition team - they break down old bone) and osteoblasts (the construction team — they build new bone back up). In your 20s, those two crews work in near-perfect balance. Sometimes the builders even get ahead, which is how you reach peak bone mass - usually in your late 20s to early 30s. That number becomes your lifetime baseline. Here's the part nobody warns us about: after 30, the demolition crew starts working a little faster than the construction crew. The breakdown (resorption) doesn't slow down — but the rebuilding (formation) does. Little by little, more comes down than goes back up. It's not dramatic. It's quiet. Which is exactly why it catches so many of us off guard. I started learning about this around 25 years ago when I first learned my bone health wasn't where it should be. What I learned motivated me to start running, be more mindful of my diet, and start strength training. But to be honest, I have to say I wasn't always consistent. Especially with the strength training. That's the piece I want you to have that I didn't: this isn't a switch that flips one day. It's a slow shift in the balance between breakdown and rebuild — and the choices you make can shift that balance back in your favor. The period after menopause is especially critical. Who else is in this with me? Comment below below if this is the first time you've heard how this actually works or if, like me, you've been learning this the hard way for years.
